MOD Easy Controller Replacement
If you're looking to upgrade or replace the controller on your MOD Easy, you've come to the right place. In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the process of changing your bike's controller.
You can also use our video guide for a step by step tutorial of how to change your controller.
Getting Started
Safety first! Always prioritize safety by ensuring that your bike is turned off before proceeding with any work. Make sure you have the necessary tools on hand: a set of snippers, your Easy keys, and a set of zip ties.
Remove battery and disconnect controller
Using your original MOD Key, open the bike's tank and locate the battery inside the tank and unplug it by removing the battery connector (red), charger (black), and any velcro straps holding the battery in place.
The controller is the "brain" of your bike and typically situated at the rear of the tank. There is a black cover protecting the controller that will need to be removed as well.
Disconnect any cable clamps attached to the controller and set them aside. Use your snippers to carefully snip the zip ties securing the cables to the controller. Be careful not to cut any of the cables themselves.
Unplug the motor connector cable from the controller. Be sure to disconnect it straight back to avoid damaging the prongs inside the cable.
Inside the tank, you will find three cables: the pedal assist cable, the main cable, and the rear light cable. Disconnect each of these cables.
Remove old controller and replace with new
Gently remove the old controller while feeding the controller cable out from the chain stay and through the tank.
Take your new controller and feed its cable through the rear of the tank. Place the wiring through the bike frame and allow it to drop until you can feel it coming through the seat tube, leaving enough slack to connect it to the motor.
Reconnect cables
Reconnect the motor cable to the new controller, ensuring that the arrows on the connectors are aligned. Improper alignment can damage the prongs, which can lead to dangerous current and electrical issues.
Use the zip ties to reconnect the cables to the frame. These are the cable stays that were originally snipped.
Start reconnecting the cables inside the tank in the following order: first, the pedal assist cable (yellow); then, the main cable (black); and finally, the rear light cable (red).
Properly organize the cables, making sure that the power and charging cables point forward towards the battery to ensure easy battery attachment.
Reinstall the controller housing and battery
Feed the power and charging cables through the controller housing. Place the controller housing over the new controller and the connected cables.
Install the battery by ensuring that the straps go underneath the mounting bar and over the battery. Plug in both the battery cable and the charging cable, making sure they are oriented correctly. Attach the battery straps to keep the battery securely in place, close and lock the tank. Turn on your bike and check that the new controller is functioning as expected.
Congratulations! You've successfully changed your MOD Easy controller.
