Do I need a license to ride an electric bike?

License for Electric Bike

Short answer - You do not!

Federal law treats electric bicycles like regular bicycles, given they meet two conditions: a 20 mph top speed in "electric only" mode (just throttling) and motor power not exceeding 750W. MOD's e-bikes meet both criteria, with a 20 mph top speed in electric mode, and they stay within the 750W limit. This means electric bikes require no special registration, license, or insurance, enjoying the same privileges as regular bikes, including access to bike lanes. However, state-specific regulations may apply, and details can be found here or by contacting your local transportation department for the latest updates.

Yes, you can ride your electric bike on Austin sidewalks, with a few exceptions. Please refer to this article for sidewalk restrictions. Always proceed with caution and be aware of your surroundings.  If available, always try to ride in the bike lanes.

Do I need to wear a Helmet?

You should always wear a helmet when riding an electric bike. While Texas does not require a helmet for riders over 17, we highly encourage you to wear one for safety and offer equipment from several top brands.
