Tannus Armour | User Guide
In this article: You’ll learn how to properly install the Tannus Armour inside your tire to reduce flats, improve ride comfort, and protect your rim.
This Article Applies to the Following Bikes
Difficulty
★★☆ Medium
Estimated Time
15 - 30 Min
Before You Start
Tools you will need
- Tire levers – such as the Pedro’s Tire Levers we carry.
- Pump or electric pump – a standard floor pump works fine, but the MOD Electric Pump makes inflating much faster and easier.
- Box cutter or scissors.
Preparation
- Power off the bike.
- Deflate the tire completely before removing it from the rim.
- Make sure you’re working in a clean, well-lit area.
- If your tire is still mounted on the bike, you’ll first need to remove the wheel. Follow the steps in this article before continuing: How to Remove and Remount Wheels.

Steps | All Models
Step 1: Prepare for Tube Removal
Unscrew the valve cap and set it aside somewhere safe so it doesn’t get lost.
Prepare two tire levers — like the Pedro’s Tire Levers from our shop — you’ll need them to separate the tire from the rim.
Press down on the center of the valve to release the air from the inner tube.

Step 2: Separate the Tire from the Rim
Insert the first tire lever between the tire and rim, then pry the tire bead upward to start separating it from the rim.
Hook the first tire lever onto a spoke to keep the bead lifted and prevent it from slipping back into the rim.
Insert the second tire lever a few inches away from the first and slide it around the rim to lift more of the tire bead off the wheel.
Continue sliding the second tire lever around the rim until one side of the tire bead is completely lifted off the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the Inner Tube
Pull the inner tube out from under the tire, starting at the valve stem and working your way around the wheel.
Push the valve stem through the rim opening and lift the tube out completely from the tire.
Lift the inner tube fully out of the tire, pulling it gently to avoid tearing or stretching it.

Step 4: Trim the Edges
- Measure ¼ inch from the inner edge of the Armour. You will trim ¼ inch from each side, all the way around the Armour.
- Using a box cutter, carefully trim along the inner edge following your measurement. Work slowly and keep the cut consistent around the entire circumference.
If scissors are easier for you, use them instead to trim the same ¼ inch from the edge. Make smooth, controlled cuts to avoid jagged edges.

Step 5: Stretch and Insert the Armour
Once the edges are trimmed, gently stretch the Armour in all directions. Work around the entire piece to make it more flexible and easier to install.
Place the Armour inside the tire, seating it evenly along the full circumference before installing the tube.

Step 6: Install the Tube and Seat the Tire
- Place the new tube inside the tire, aligning the valve stem with the valve hole in the rim.
- Tuck the rest of the tube evenly inside the tire, ensuring it isn’t twisted or pinched.
Tuck the Armour into the rim by gently pressing the edges down into the rim channel.
Push the tire bead back onto the rim using your thumbs, then use a tire lever to help lift the last section of the tire bead over the rim edge, making sure not to pinch the inner tube.

Step 7: Inflate the Tire
- Attach the pump to the valve and begin inflating the tire slowly. Using an electric pump can make this process faster and easier.
- Check the tire sidewall for the recommended PSI range printed on the rubber. In this case, 40 PSI.
Inflate while slightly lifting the tire off the ground to prevent the rubber from bending or deforming under weight.
Inflate to the PSI indicated on your tire, using the gauge to confirm accurate pressure before disconnecting the pump.
Note: Different MOD BIKE models use different tires, each with its own recommended PSI range. Always check the sidewall of your tire for the correct pressure before inflating.

Step 7: Final Checks
Check that the thin rubber line above the rim is evenly visible all around the wheel—this confirms the tire is seated straight and centered.
Screw the valve cap back on to keep the valve clean and protected.

Step 8: Remount the Wheel
Once your tire is inflated and properly seated, follow the corresponding steps to remount your wheel.
Troubleshooting
- Tire won’t seat properly → Deflate the tire completely, check that the Tannus Armour is centered, then reseat the tire evenly before reinflating.
- Tube keeps getting pinched during install → Lightly inflate the tube before installation and avoid using excessive force with tire levers.
- Bulge or uneven spot in the tire → The Armour may be twisted or uneven. Deflate, reposition the Armour evenly inside the tire, and try again.
- Hard to install the final section of the tire → Use plastic tire levers and work in small sections. Do not force the bead.
- Air leaking after inflation → Check valve alignment and ensure the tube is not pinched between the Armour and the tire bead.
FAQs
- Do I need to remove the wheel from the bike to install the Armour?
Yes. Follow the steps in How to Remove and Remount Wheels before attempting to repair or replace the inner tube. - Can I use Tannus Armour with tubeless tires?
No. Tannus Armour is designed for use with inner tubes only. - Can I ride if I get a flat?
In some cases, yes. The Armour may allow short-distance riding without rim damage. Avoid rough terrain and repair the flat as soon as possible. - Does the Armour affect ride quality?
Yes - most riders experience a smoother ride with improved vibration damping. - Should I adjust tire pressure after installing it?
Yes. You can typically run 5–10 PSI lower than normal. Adjust based on comfort and riding conditions. - Will the Armour compress over time?
Some compression is normal, especially at higher PSI. Lower pressures allow the Armour to rebound more fully.
Warning
⚠️ Important Safety & Liability Notice These instructions are provided as a general guide for installing Tannus Armour on MOD BIKES. Always ensure the tire bead is fully seated, the tube is not pinched, and the wheel is securely installed before riding. Use plastic tire levers only. Metal levers may damage the tube, Armour, or rim. Improper installation may result in tire failure, loss of control, injury, or damage. If you are not confident performing this installation, seek assistance from a qualified bike technician. MOD BIKES is not responsible for damage or injury caused by improper installation or failure to follow these guidelines.
