Why is my Battery Draining so Fast? (Monochrome Display)

Rapid Battery Drain

If you notice that your battery is draining too quickly, it may be due to an incorrect setting or due to a faulty battery. This guide is intended to help you diagnose and resolve these issues.

How to adjust your settings

To access the settings menu hold the "+" and "-" buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds until the settings menu appears.

Once inside the settings menu, you can cycle through the options by tapping the "+" and "-" buttons to scroll up and down.

When your desired settings menu option is highlighted, select it by tapping the "i" button.  When you have changed the settings to your desired preference, save them by pressing and holding the "i" button for 3 seconds.

You will know that your settings have been updated when the display reads “OK!”  The display will exit the settings option and return to the main settings menu.

Voltage Setting

Set Voltage affects how your battery percentage readout operates, and shouldn't be changed to any values other than the ones laid out in this guide, as doing so will have an adverse effect on your battery function. All MOD BIKES have default settings shown in the image below.

First, verify the settings are not already set to the values shown above. If they are the same, please contact support and inform them of the troubleshooting steps you have taken and the current state of your diagnostic efforts. If they are different, continue this guide.

With your bike powered off, hold down the "+", "-", and "i" button simultaneously for three seconds

This will reset the voltage for the entire system. Watch your display for a message that reads "48V". If the message reads "36V" power off your bike and repeat this step. NOTE: The message displays much faster than shown in this guide.

Next, navigate to the Set Voltage settings menu option and select it by tapping the "i" button.

Each highlighted value is editable. Adjust the values using the "+" and "-" buttons. Once a value is correct, tap the "i" button to move on to the next. Once you complete the final value and tap "i", the Set Voltage window will close and return to the main settings menu with an "OK!". NOTE: If you accidentally tap to the next value when the previous one is incorrect, just tap back into the setting option.

Current Setting

Adjusting the bike's current will primarily affect the amount of acceleration.  This setting is safe for you to adjust, but you should never set the current above 22A, and you should also note that the higher the current, the faster your battery will drain. If you are looking to get more range out of your bike, or if this is your first electric bike and you are still getting used to riding it, we recommend setting the current to 12A and raising it later when you feel more comfortable with the bike.  One of the main reasons the battery is draining too quickly is because this setting is too high.

Scroll down to Set Current and select it. MOD BIKES with mid-drive motors do not have this settings option.

Ensure the value is set between 12A and 22A. The higher the current, the faster the battery will drain and the more power you will receive. 17A is the baseline set by MOD BIKES mechanics.

Final Step

When you are finished adjusting the settings of your MOD BIKE if you want to apply your saved settings, hold the "i" button for 3 seconds until the speedometer appears. If you wish to abandon your changes, exit the settings menu by holding the "-" button for 3 seconds.

Faulty Battery

If none of these steps helped to resolve your issue, your battery may be approaching the end of its life cycle. Our batteries are rated for 1000 full-charge cycles.  Depending on how often you use your bike, it should last about 5 years.

Our batteries are fairly resistant to temperature changes and do not require periodic power cycling like cell phone batteries.  If you plan on storing your bike for more than a month we recommend that you keep your battery level around 50% to avoid damage to the battery's cells.  If you have stored the battery for too long with either a full or empty charge, it is possible that the battery has been damaged.

Extreme heat and water can also cause damage to your battery.  If any of these problems seem likely, or if your battery is swelling or leaking, please do not use it, and contact us immediately.  Always make sure to properly dispose of a faulty battery, and to handle them with extreme caution.  If you touch any leaking fluid, immediately wash your hands and avoid touching anything.
