Why is my Battery Draining so Fast? (Non-color Display)

Rapid Battery Drain

If you notice that your battery is draining too quickly, it may be due to an incorrect setting or due to a faulty battery. This guide is intended to help you diagnose and resolve these issues.

Adjusting Your Bike's Settings

It is possible that your voltage or amperage settings are incorrect.  To get into the settings menu you will need to hold down the "+" and "-" buttons until the settings menu appears.

Once inside the settings menu, you can cycle through the various options by tapping the "+" and "-" buttons to scroll up and down.

Once the menu option that you would like to change has been highlighted, you can select it by pressing the "i" button.  When you have changed the settings to your desired preference, you must save them by pressing and holding the "i" button for 3 seconds.

You will know that your settings have been changed when the display reads “OK!”  The display will then exit the settings menu and return to the home screen.

Voltage Setting

The voltage setting affects how your battery percentage readout operates, and shouldn't be changed as it comes adjusted to show you the most accurate battery level.

Most of our bikes will have default settings similar to the ones found on the image on the right.  It is important that you do not alter these settings, as doing so will have an adverse effect on your battery level readout.

Current Setting

Adjusting the bike's current will primarily affect the amount of acceleration.  This setting is safe for you to adjust, but you should never set current above 22A, and you should also note that the higher the current, the faster your battery will drain. If you are looking to get more range out of your bike, or if this is your first electric bike and you are still getting used to riding it, we recommend setting the current to 12A and raising later when you feel more comfortable with the bike.  One of the main reasons that battery's drain too quickly is because this setting has been set too high.

Voltage Mode - Triple Button Reset

One possible cause for poor battery performance is when the bike has been set to the incorrect voltage mode.  To fix this issue, start by turning your bike off by holding the “i” button until the display powers down.

Next, hold the “+”, “-”, and “i” buttons down at the same time until the display turns on.  This will switch the display between 36V and 48V modes, and also reset your Voltage settings.

When your display powers back on, it will display the voltage mode.  Both the MOD City+ and the MOD Easy should be in 48V mode to operate correctly, and the MOD City should be in 36V mode.  If your display is in the incorrect mode, you will need to reset the display again by powering the bike down, and then holding the “+”, “-”, and “i” buttons down at the same time until the display turns back on.

Faulty Battery

If none of these steps helped to resolve your issue, it is possible that your battery is approaching the end of its life-cycle.  Our batteries are rated for 1000 full-charge cycles.  Depending on how often you use your bike, it should last about 5 years.

Our batteries are fairly resistant to temperature changes, and do not require periodic power-cycling like cell-phone batteries.  That said, if you plan on storing your bike for more than a month we recommend that you keep your battery level around 50% to avoid damage to the battery's cells.  If you have stored the battery for too long with either full or empty charge, it is possible that the battery has been damaged.

Extreme heat and water can also cause damage to your battery.  If any of these problems seem likely, or if your battery is swelling or leaking, please do not use it, and contact us immediately.  Always make sure to properly dispose of a faulty battery, and to handle them with extreme caution.  If you touch any leaking fluid, immediately wash your hands and avoid touching anything.
