Error Code Troubleshooting

MOD BIKES, like any piece of technology, occasionally encounter issues. MOD BIKES have built-in error codes (fault codes) that help to diagnose which component has a problem. These codes have the same meaning on all of our bikes. Understanding these fault codes can often be the key to resolving issues swiftly and getting back on the road!

21 - Current Abnormality

This error indicates that something is amiss with the power delivery. There are a few different possibilities to troubleshoot this error code:

V2 Models (Monochrome): Click for more information.

  • Double check the battery is in fact fully charged.

    • Check the battery level indicator on the battery itself, and not just on the display screen.

  • If the battery is charged, check that the battery is properly positioned and connected in the battery housing.

  • Check the display is set to 48V and not accidentally set to 36V (unless you own an older model MOD City - double check the battery itself if unsure). The display voltage should match the battery voltage.

    • To fix this issue, start by turning your display off by holding the “i” button until the display powers down.  Then, hold the “+”, “-”, and “i” buttons down at the same time until the display turns on.  This will switch the display between 36V and 48V modes, and also reset your Voltage settings.

  • This error code can also appear if a cable is unplugged or loose, but it could also indicate a faulty controller or a short circuit with the motor phases. Check all of your bike’s cable connections and ensure they are fully connected.

  • If you have checked all the above and still have not resolved the issue, it is possible the display itself might be the issue.

    • If you have another MOD bike at home, try swapping out the display from your other bike to see if that resolves the issue.

  • In rare cases, the result of this error code can be water damage to the battery.

    • If you suspect this may be the case, let us know and explain what water damage the battery took on.

    • Back-up/additional MOD batteries can be bought here

  • If you have diagnosed this issue at home and have not found a solution, please send us a message describing which troubleshooting steps you’ve taken, and we will be happy to help you out.

V3 Models (Color): Click for more information.

This error indicates that something is amiss with the power delivery. Ensure the battery is fully charged and reattempt to power on and ride the bike. If the issue persists a firmware update might need to be applied to the display and the controller to remedy this error. Please reach out to the support team for more help by submitting a ticket here: Help Center. If you are located in Austin, TX, please schedule an appointment to have a mechanic perform an update for you. Book a Tune-up/Repair

22 - Throttle Abnormality

All V3 models as well as the MOD City+ 2 and MOD Easy 2 come with a throttle for convenient power on demand, thus this error code is limited to those models with a throttle (Berlin 2 and Black 2 are exempt)

The throttle cable runs from the throttle (which is on the right part of the handlebar) to the main wire harness.

  • The most common cause of an error 22 is having the throttle engaged while turning on the bike.

    • Try turning the bike off and back on again, ensuring that you are not touching the throttle.

  • This error can also appear if the throttle's cable is disconnected or loose.

    • Follow the cable coming out of your bike's throttle to its connection point with the main wire, and verify it is properly connected.

  • If you have a second MOD bike, try connecting the other throttle to troubleshoot and see if this resolves the issue.

  • If nothing above resolves the error code, send us a message describing your troubleshooting steps and we will be happy to help you out.

  • Replacement throttles can be purchased here.

23 - Motor Abnormality

This error is usually displayed when the motor's power cable is not properly attached to the bike's main cable. In most cases, this is a relatively quickly resolved error code.

             Click here for more information.

The motor cable's attachment quality can be checked down on your chainstay, opposite of the drivetrain. Verifying the cable is not crushed, melted or cut is the best place to begin. Disconnect the cable by pulling it apart. Check for any debris or soot. Debris can be blown out, but soot is indicative of pin misfiring. Reconnect the motor by lining up the arrows on the outside of the cable housing. If your issue persists or you find soot on your motor cable pins, please reach the support team via our Help Center.

24 - Motor Hall Signal Abnormality

This error is usually displayed when there is a problem with the signal from the motor to the controller.

This error is usually displayed when there is a problem with the signal from the motor to the controller.

  • Check the motor's power cable (which comes out of the axle) to ensure that it is properly attached to the bike's main cable.

  • While ensuring the motor power cable is connected, inspect it closely:

Step 1: Check the integrity of the motor cable where it comes out of the motor. Check for any pinching, tearing, or fraying.

Step 2: (A) Snip the zip ties securing your motor connection point to your chainstay. (B) pull the motor cable out from behind the chainstay.

Step 3: Follow the length of the cable towards the front of the bike checking for any pinching, tearing, or fraying.

Step 4: Disconnect the motor cable connection point. Check for any broken or bent pins, debris, or soot. Blow out both ends of the connection point.

Step 5: Reconnect your motor cable ensuring the arrows on each end are lined up. NOTE: This is very important; the pins can get crushed if not properly aligned.

Step 7: Reattach the motor cable to the inside of the chainstay with zip ties.

25 - Brake Abnormality

Your brake levers each contain a sensor that tells the motor to shut off whenever you use your brakes.

There are two cables running from the brake lever - the thicker one is the hydraulic brake cable, and the other is the motor inhibitor’s brake sensor.

            Click here for more information.

A brake abnormality means there is an issue with the sensor or a cable shortage. If you experience this, bring your bike in for an assessment or follow this guide to resolve yourself.

The following solution can be applied to both V2 and V3 models.

  • This error is usually displayed when the motor inhibitor's brake sensor is too tight.

  • If you hold down the brake levers while turning the bike on, you will also receive this error message.

    • Releasing the brake will usually get rid of this error. If it doesn’t, try turning off the bike, and adjusting the depth of the fixing cap.

  • Power on the bike and locate the set screw (A) and loosen it with a 2mm allen wrench

  • Using an 8mm wrench slowly loosen the fixing cap until the Error 25 message clears

If the motor inhibitor’s brake sensor is loose or broken it will need to be adjusted.  We recommend bringing your bike in for one of our technicians for this repair.

26 - Battery Under Voltage

This error occurs when the display and controller are out of sync with the battery management system.

Your battery is usually at a lower voltage than the display and controller are designed to register. This asynchrony between these components allows the bike to power on but will restrict all other functionality. This can be remedied by charging the battery and having a MOD BIKES Mechanic apply a firmware update to the display and controller.

30 - Communication Abnormality

This error code results from one component of the bike’s electrical system not properly “communicating” with another part (whether the display, motor, controller, or wiring). There are many possibilities with this error code.

  • This error usually appears if the display's cable is unplugged, loose, or damaged.

    • Check all your bike's cable connections, starting with the display's cable.

    • Check the cable running from your control panel to your display.

  • If you have a second MOD Display Screen, swap it out and see if the error code is resolved.

    • If so, then the other display screen is the source of the issue.

  • Inspect the main wire for any damage or abrasions.

    • Damage to the main wire could be the source of the issue, but it could also pertain to the motor or the controller.

  • If all of your cables are securely connected, please send us a message and we will be happy to help you out.
